Ashes Divide - Forever Can Be

Music Monday!!!

Lets start this last week of September with one of my all time favorite songs...

FOREVER CAN BE by Ashes Divide.

I usually pick a song from one of my books playlist but this time I was inspired by someone to post this song. Thanks Nate! This song will soon be represented in one of my future books (just not published yet!).

Why this song? First off the music is completely haunting yet hopeful. Second, the lyrics have so many hidden levels...deep, dark, and filled with hope. It truly speaks to me. Hopefully it will resonate with something inside of you too...

Look...listen...fade away...M.D.

The Ultimate Distraction...

Gears of War 3 Review!!!

I'm a writer. BUT lately I have been having the hardest time finding my words. Not because of writers block. Not because of family engagements. It's because of Epic's new release...Gears of War 3.

A gamer at heart, I thought I'd review the new monkey wrench in my creativity. First off, I'm a huge Gears fan and been waiting for this final installment for years. It is everything I have been waiting for. Blood, guts, guns, war and more blood all rolled into a beautiful package.

For any fan of the first 2 games, the 3rd installment is easily the best. Better story, better battle scenes, better graphics. For non fans, this 3rd chapter probably won't change your mind in becoming a fan. It's only drawback is that it is more of the same. Yes, it's on a grander scale but it's still just grunt, grind and move on. (not that thats a bad thing!) The story ends satisfyingly enough and left me wanting another few chapters in the series. I won't post any spoilers though (I hate that!)

If your a gamer (like me), than your in for a treat...grab a copy of GOW 3 (Xbox 360). In a year of big games ready to hit the shelves, it just may end up the last man is that good!

Now to finish another round of multiplayer deathmatch before I write that award winning novel...

...ugh...damn you Epic!...

More Q & A...

Ask me and I'll speak the truth...

Here's the newest batch of questions...

A: Ember the series takes place on Maui, for the most part. In book 2 DOWNPOUR, the scenery changes a lot. The story calls for it. First third of the book is a globe trotting adventure. Book 3 AFTERSHOCK, gets things back to the islands (Maui). I chose the Hawaiian islands because of a dream. I dreamt one of the scenes from the first book Ember. It takes place in one of the later chapters at the moment before all heck breaks loose. I saw a boy lying in the pouring rain with two girls crying over him, with the song "SIGN YOUR NAME" by Terrence Trent D'Arby serenading the scene. I hope that wasn't a spoiler!

A: Yes and no. Each book shares a very islandy soundscape with different emotional tracks scattered throughout. Ember has more easy, laid back youthful songs. Downpour is much more emotional and worldly. Aftershock (book 3) seems to be a even mix of both the first 2 music to make you feel as if you were standing along the beaches with the island storms blowing through your earbuds. Plus very direct and emotional tunes that reflect the characters adventures and troubles.

A: Because I really do feel that "music is life." We learn with it, grow with it, heal with it, love with it...why not read with it. Many people already make their own playlists while they read their favorite book, I figured I'd give my readers a musical "crumb trail." They don't have to follow it. They can create their own but the soundtrack would really enhance the stories plot points. Many of the songs really influenced the story and its characters. My ultimate goal is to have my newest book and accompanying playlist on the top of the charts. You download my book and the songs download along side it. Easy peasy! M.D.

Nuno Bettencourt: Crave

Music Monday!

One of my favorite songs of all time!

"CRAVE" by Nuno Bettencourt.

I'm willing to bet 90% of the world has never heard this song or its talented writer. Nuno is best known as the lead guitarist for the band Extreme (more recently he has filled the same role for Rihanna, on her world tours...) When I sat down to write the Ember Series, this song instantly found a place on the musical playlists.

Chapter 24_CRAVE is one of my favorites in Ember. The words and song are intertwined into the chapter as Asia kidnaps Max and surprises him with a...well...I guess I shouldn't spoil the surprise...(the word CRAVE is involved...)

I hope you enjoy the song and the chapter it represents. It was one of the easiest ones to write in the Ember Series...M.D.

Review Friday!!!

It's Friday and time for another review.

Being a new author I've found that there are days when I have way too much on my plate...this is one of those days. So instead of my usual review of something I love or hate, I'm going to share a quick review of my book Ember. It's short, sweet and to the point...

I'll have plenty to say next week...until then...M.D.

More Questions...

Q & A!!!

Hopefully I'll have an interview from someone other than myself soon...

Kinda feel like I'm talking to myself every Wednesday.

A: I just write whatever I feel. It just so happened that my first book (EMBER) came out that way. I was in the zone and wrote the second book (DOWNPOUR) as well. When I finally began to show it off, it appealed to the older teenage I just went with it. I have started other stories and novels that are definitely more adult. Just wait...

A: Hopefully sooner than later. I'm concentrating on finishing the halfway point of the Ember Series (book 3) right now. After that I will be launching another YA series called 13 BREATHS. But after that I really want to push for an adult book. I have a horror story plotted out and a thriller that I'm very excited about. Both are very much geared to the adult audience.

A: Hard to say. It is written and done. I just need to polish it up a little. My time is being eaten up by the Ember Series right now. Promoting book 1 - EMBER, readying book 2 - DOWNPOUR for release at the end of September and finishing the third book - AFTERSHOCK for release before the end of the year. I haven't decided if I'll squeeze 13 BREATHS in somewhere before I finish up AFTERSHOCK. Not enough time in the day...ugh...write on!

Music Monday!!!

The voice of Max Valentine...

BUSH: "The Sound of Winter"

Instead of a song from my current playlist for Ember, I've decided to change it up just a little. The new BUSH single is constantly rattling around my head as I write lately. I've always used Gavin and the boys as the musical voice of Max. In book 1 Ember, he sings the BUSH song "Mouth" for his first concert. (I'll add that to a future Music Monday!) They just seem to share a certain gravel in their tone...if Max Valentine were to be brought into the flesh, I'm sure he would sing like this...

Anyways, I hope you enjoy...

Look...listen...fade away...M.D.

It Can't Rain All The Time...

Friday Review!

It's the end of the week and time for another review. This week I thought I'd talk about one of my favorite movies. It has inspired almost all my writing.

The Crow.

Dark, gritty, violent and filled with dying hope. I find the visual ugliness in the movie...beautiful. The story of future rockstar, Eric Draven and his murdered girlfriend is tragic and filled with hope. When the young couple are murdered in their apartment by the scum of the city, Eric is brought back to life one year later to exact revenge on the ones who wronged them.

Eric is poetic justice in evil clown makeup. As he finds the people responsible for his (and her) death, they fall to his vengeance. With each kill he is brought closer to what he wants the most...peace with the girl he will always love...even in the hereafter...

The movie is filled with clever fight sequences and fantastic music. The soundtrack is just as popular as the movie. The character has become a mainstay at Halloween over the years. There has been 3 sequels made (None of them even half as good as the first!) and a short lived TV show. Recently the property has been dusted off for a new Hollywood remake. Big mistake! The Crow is one of those movies that does not ever need to be it the perfect movie? No, but it is a classic.

The spirit of this movie is what makes it appealing to me. True love never dies...

P.S. "We miss you Brandon..."

Q & A Wednesday!!!

Lets keep it light today...

A: youth! When I was a kid it was Transformers and Voltron. I would start my mornings with the latest episode of transforming robots and finish my afternoon, running home to catch the 5 mighty lions do their best to save the universe. I'm thinking about starting up that routine again!

Now, as an adult, there is only one cartoon worthy of my praise...Invader Zim!

A: Boxers. It's a freedom thing...

A: I'm a pretty simple boy...burgers, tacos, chips...BUT lately I can not seem to get enough of Chinese food.

KUNG POW!!!...M.D.

Music Monday - Holiday Edition...

311 - Amber

Chapter 04_Morning Glory

The perfect song to introduce Samantha Summers. Max's other love interest in the Ember Series. The song fits the moment perfectly. Island morning, playful banter, young tropical infatuation...

New Chili Peppers!

Friday Review!

The new Red Hot Chili Peppers album "I'M WITH YOU" just came out. I'm a long time fan. So here goes my review.

It's been awhile since their last album. I hadn't realized how much I missed their funky sounds. That being said...I'm a little disappointed in their new album. It has a vibe that says "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT." Now there's nothing wrong with sticking to familiar territory but this is the Peppers. One of the most influential bands in 20 years. So many younger bands have tried to be the "next Chili Peppers" and failed miserably. So when this many years (6) have passed without any new music, it should be better than "middle of the road."

Now don't get me wrong...there are some bright spots on the new album. "Brendan's Death Song, Rain Dance Maggie..."are a couple stand outs. BUT I felt like at the end of each track I wanted more. Middle of the road just isn't good enough when it comes to a band I respect and cherish.

I think I'M WITH YOU the album will grow on me (AT LEAST I HOPE SO...). I hope to use it to write a future chapter in a story that hasn't been born yet...we shall see...M.D.
