Casting Sam!!!

Casting Call Thursday.

Today we cast Samantha Summers. Possible soulmate to Max Valentine in the Ember series.

Kirsten Prout

I'm not too familiar with her work but I was pointed in her direction. She has the wholesome girl-next-door quality. Right age too...

Throw out a choice for any of the characters in my books and maybe they will be chosen.

See ya next week when we cast the "bad guy"...Devon Wahlberg.

Chapter 33 - RISING

Music Monday!

This weeks pick is filled with hope. OneRepublic's "Say (All I Need)" is the background music to one of the defining moments (and chapters) in Ember. It's one of my favorite songs and one of the hardest chapters to write in the series.

Check it out and enjoy...look...listen...fade away. M.D.

Ember Movie Casting.

Casting Call Thursday!

Another week, another choice for the next big movie franchise! Ember will be a movie one day...I promise you that! So, let's not waste anymore time and cast the series. Last week it was the hot-headed fire-starter Max Valentine. This week, the beautifully haunted rainmaker Asia Michaels is in the spotlight.

Asia needs to be tall, strong, angry and impossibly cold at times. With dark hair and crystal blue eyes. I have cast her role before (feel free to scroll the past posts to see...) but this week I'll go with a pick that was given to me...Amber Heard.

She is usually a blonde but with the darker locks she actually fits quite well...

Feel free to add your own thoughts and choice...we'll meet here again next week for another casting!

Casting Call Thursday!

I asked for some choices for casting Max Valentine in the inevitable movie but didn't get too many I'll throw out an older pick until some more choices are thrown out there...

Thomas McDonell

It's all about the bangs! While I wrote Ember, I saw Max with a hint of a Johnny Depp why not pick the young actor they're calling the next Depp.

Let me know what you think and feel free to leave a choice of your own...we'll see ya next Thursday to pick another cast member for the Ember Series!

Burn on! M.D.

Music Monday!

Chapter 25 - NUMB is the focus of this weeks music blog!

Alanis Morissette's "Straightjacket" sets the tone for this frustrating moment in the book EMBER.

I love her, I love this song. It fits the vibe of the chapter so well...

Music Monday...

Another week...another song...

Today we spotlight one of my favorites on the Ember soundtrack. "I Don't Trust Myself With Loving You" by John Mayer. Love him or hate him...this song is perfect for the soundtrack in EMBER.

Chapter 17 - Kryptonite

It sets a tone and sexiness for the chapter. The song helped write the chapter.

Lucy Zhang 2.0

Thursday Casting Call!

Today we are looking for the perfect Lucy. Asia's on again, off again "friend." Her role seems small at first but she is extremely important to the shifting story in the Ember series. This week we cast a little younger than her previous pick...Hayley Kiyoko.

She is best known for the Disney movie Lemonade Mouth. She has a certain edge and spunk that Lucy carries throughout the series. Share your own picks for the troubled ex...

Official Q & A...

Wednesday Q & A:

Thanks for the pleasant interview Anne...

So here I am little ole me to interview you this amazing indy author just waiting to break the scene!!!!!

1- As a male in the field of paranormal stories with a twist of romance was it anymore challenging to capture the feelings that would entice all audiences?

A: I don’t think so. I just write what I feel. It just so happens that I write like a rockstar with the soul of an old romantic! Ha. Seriously, I enjoy the emotional stuff...always have.

2- When you wrote Ember were you seeking out the male audiences as well as the female?

A: Yes and no. I knew if I did my job right, the female audience would love Ember and they would love the perspective of Max Valentine. When it comes to the heart, we’re not that different. As for the male perspective in paranormal YA, I think it is definitely lacking. I really love a strong female lead but always wished there was more selection out there for us boys.

3- What was the inspiration for Ember?

A: In one I was sitting at my old job, bored out of my mind, when a song started playing on my iPod. It was OASIS’ “Stop Crying Your Heart Out.” Instantly I saw a boy holding on to someone important to him but slowly loosing his grip. As they fell away into a long dark fall, he passes out...that became the opening pages to Ember. From there, everything else fell into place. Ember was born from all the music in the universe, comic books and my love of 80’s movies.

4- How did you feel submitting not only a book for critique but also the music along with it?

A: Excited. The Ember series is meant to be enjoyed with the accompanying musical playlist. Every chapter has its own song...its own soundtrack. If you just browse the playlist you may wonder what “this” song is doing there and what “that” song has do with a YA book BUT when played in the right order, at the right time, it all makes sense. The music compliments the words and vice versa. A literary soundtrack! I see my stories as a movie while I write. I also hear them as well.

5- Was it centering to have the music along with the book? I know when I read it as most others the music only made the chapters come to life.

A: That’s what I was hoping for. I know I’m not the first to use music with writing or build a playlist for the readers to follow but I think I’m one of the first to make the music so intertwined with the story. I hope one day you’ll be able to download my books and the playlists will download along with it. As you read, the songs would play with each chapter when prompted. A true expression of my imagination. That being centers everything I do in, loving, writing, healing...

6- Does the music speak through you as it does with some people ie did it guide the story that we've all fell utterly in love with?

A: At times. A half dozen chapters were directly inspired by their song(s). Those chapters basically wrote themselves. Most of the chapters were written and then dictated what song should be in the background. Each song had to add to the experience in the chapter or the emotions of the characters.

7- What was your one vice in writing the series? And can you share how this works for you?

A: Well, music would be the obvious answer but I think we’ve covered that about... “eye drops.” I’m addicted to the things! The more intense the brand, the more I like it! All the long hours staring into my computer screen wouldn’t be possible without my “eye-crack!”

8- Your characters seem to leap off the pages and grab our hearts are they fashioned after real people in your life or did you grow to love them as singular entities?

A: Both. The main characters (Max, Asia, Samantha) are a combination of ideas and comic book characters that have rattled around my head for years BUT their words and trials are directly pulled from my experiences. For those who know me, they will see a lot of me in Max but he’s mostly made up (I wish I was that cool!). As for the girls, I wanted them to be polar opposites. Asia - tall, dark and strong. Samantha - small, soft and sweet. Some of the secondary characters are based off people I know though...and I’ve heard that at least one of them is completely flattered. (You’re welcome Uncle Frank!)

9- What can your fans come to expect in the next few books from the Ember series?

A: Twists! Twists! Twists! I love to keep the plot moving. More music, more tears and much more heartache...BUT wrapped in a beautiful bow of hope. That’s the single thread throughout the series...hope.

10- Finally are you Team Asia, Team Sam, or Team Max?

A: An impossible question to answer! (Team Oz anyone?) Depends on what chapter I am writing...

"Thanks again for the questions! Here's the link to the original interview.

Until next time...M.D.

Uncle Frank

Busy day today! Have a brand new review BUT that will have to wait until tomorrow...for now, it's casting time!

Casting Call Thursday!

Frank Valentine (Uncle Frank)

Going with a little younger casting then last time, I am picking Timothy Olyphant (I AM # 4)...

He would bring the soft spoken, no nonsense Uncle Frank to life with a certain confidence I enjoy. What do you think? M.D.

Sam Summers

Casting Call Thursday!

Samantha Summers 2.0

Samantha is one of the key rolls to an Ember movie. Without her the story would not work. Smart, petite and artistic...she is Max's possible soulmate. Many people who read Ember immediately see one particular actress in the part...Hayden Panettiere.

I can see why, she's small and carries a strong confidence that my character Sam has. I never really saw her in the part when I was writing the story but I would be willing to give her a chance. I'll give credit to the young fan who first threw Hayden's name out there when I asked about casting the Ember movie..."THANKS COURT!"

Feel free to add your choices in the cast!

Be sure to check out past choices for the girl next door in the Ember series...M.D.

Buy Me...

Missed yesterdays blog so I am combining it with todays Q & A.

A: All the main book retailers...

A: Whichever site works for you! A great alternative is though. They have every kind of ebook format available. Follow the link and pick your poison.

A: Hopefully I will be able to offer that in the future. I am trying to embrace the digital future but the thought of running my fingers over the cover of one of my books, is very exciting. I am sure I will make some one day...M.D.

#1 Crush

Music Monday!

Let's start the week off with some music from one of the best things to happen to music! Garbage! I. LOVE. THEM. When writing the original manuscript for EMBER, this band was on continuous rotation on my computer and stereo.

Chapter 9: CRUSH is where this song resides in Book 1 EMBER. Great chapter, even greater song! I hope you enjoy the song!

Asia Lyn Michaels...

Casting Call Thursday!

Asia Lyn Michaels 2.0:

The Ember movie can only be epic with the right casting. Today it's Asia's turn...

Jessica Lowndes

She is best known for the new 90210 series and a couple small parts in the movies. She fits the physical features and can even sing (which comes in handy for a certain karaoke scene!) Let me know what you think and feel free to throw out your own choice!

Check out previous posts for older selections in the Ember movie...M.D.

Ask Away...

Q & A Wednesday...

A: Hmmm...probably the anti-hero. As much fun as writing the "hero" can be, the bad guy is always easier for me. You can usually let go a little bit with the darker characters. The best scenario is "the bad guy" who is the "hero." They always have the best story arc...

A: Female! Male is much easier to write (being one myself) but the girls are so much more exciting. Much more complicated. I have so many male characters that I truly love exploring through my storytelling but I've found my stories really take shape when developing the female characters. The "girls" make or break the story, in my opinion. One of my upcoming manuscripts has a female lead that I am head over heals excited about! She is awesome! If I do my job right, she will change the game in female heroes. Cross your fingers...

A: Due to the fact that my writing is engulfed by the Ember series right now...probably Max Valentine. His muse Asia Michaels runs a close second. When I started writing the series I didn't expect to enjoy writing her story scared me a little. She's so damaged, so lost. I thought I would have a hard time reflecting that. It turns out to be the opposite...she brings out the creativity in me. Asia rocks! However...if I take a step back and look at all the different personalities I've created...there is a new female that I have enjoyed more than any other person so far. Her name is Olivia and she is a big part of my next series (13 BREATHS)... Hopefully I will have some exciting news on my next project soon...M.D.

Undisclosed Desires

Music Monday!

MUSE - Undisclosed Desires

One of the greatest bands in the universe. For a writer, there is hardly any better "muse" then this band. This song is used in my new book DOWNPOUR, book 2 in the Ember series. Chapter 5 - Dark Romance is the perfect place in the books playlist for this song. Sometimes when I write a song just jumps out and insists to be in the story...this is one of those times.

I can't really go into too much detail about the chapter without spoiling some of the drama and storyline of the series...soooooooooo, I'll just leave you with the video.

Look...listen...fade away...M.D.

"I want to reconcile the violence in your heart...I want to recognize your beauty is not just a mask...I want to exorcise the demons from your past...I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart..."

Friday Reviews!

iOS 5 is finally here.

After the monumental disappointment of NOT getting an official iPhone 5 (instead the 4s showed up...ugh...) there is finally a silver lining in the technology cloud. iOS 5, shiny and new, has a few surprises for your iPhone and iPad. Updates to the camera are welcomed(new grid & editing). New messaging is a blessing(free messaging to anyone running new iOS 5). Twitter is now part of the whole Apple experience(not too different if you already had the Twitter app). Most importantly is iCloud...

Streaming and syncing your busy lives is easy and almost seamless with iCloud. Apple only offers a free 5 gig storage which might become an issue later on BUT Apple will let you upgrade to bigger storage(Yay!) for a price(Boo!).

Everything with the new OS is still a little new to me, I'm finding something new everyday with it. I'll have a more in depth review in the future, after I've had a few months to play with it. So far, so good though.

Keep the surprises coming Apple. Now bring on the new iPad!

Max Valentine 2.0

Thursday Casting Call!

Every Thursday we pick a character from my book Ember and cast it. We have ran through most of the cast in past weeks (FEEL FREE TO SCROLL DOWN AND CHECK OUT THE PREVIOUS CHOICES!), soooooooooo...let's start over with a newer and younger cast.

Max Valentine: fire-starter, music lover, dark romantic... My first choice for him will always be Ben Barnes(Prince Caspian, Dorian Gray) but lets move on...

...Thomas McDonell (Prom) has been brought to my attention (Thank you Court!). He has a young Johnny Depp vibe. The very same vibe I used when writing the character.

Throw a guitar over his shoulder and a fireball in his hands and we have Max! What do you think?

Until next week...M.D.

Wicked Game

Music Monday.

Ahhh, young love! Todays post is inspired by one of my favorite chapters in Ember. Chapter 28 - WICKED GAME. The musical playlist and chapter share the same name. I give Chris Isaak credit in my book for the use of his beautifully haunting song BUT I personally use Giant Drag's version of his song. It fits my story better. It fits the dark and haunting pull both Asia and Max are feeling toward each other. Great chapter BUT even greater song!

Look...listen...fade away.

Hope you enjoy...M.D.

Friday Review...

I missed last weeks review because I was on a self imposed vacation from everything electronic, all the technology that buzzes throughout our busy lives. So, this weeks review will involve just There is no bigger social haven than Facebook and recently they have begun some "upgrades."

Big Brother is a term that gets thrown around a lot and the new update has not helped that gossip. In fact, the new update has made it worse. I understand tech must grow and evolve BUT the new Facebook seems to be not needed. The "news feed" used to serve its function very well but now it is completely frustrating. Instead of just showing everyone who you follow posts in the time they posted them, we get what Facebook thinks we want to see. Sometimes its dead on and other times I've found friends post from days before that never showed up in the first place.

Facebook wants you to now add lists to your feeds. If you take the time to set these up it does improve things. Separating friends from family or work associates becomes rather tiresome though if you have a bazillion friends. It does make things easier to click on individual lists once you have taken the time to separate them though....i.e. friends, family, etc.

The worst part of the new update seems to affect the public pages. I have 2, my authors page and my books personal page. Before the update anything I posted seemed to be seen easily by any and everyone following me. Now...after the update, hardly anyone seems to be seeing anything. That sucks when your trying to network and push a product. My pages traffic seems to have been cut in half or worse.

I will probably continue with my personal page but if things don't level out and settle back to a calm and functional Facebook, my commercial pages may find a new home soon...can you say Google+!'s my review...

...Facebook good. Update bad! Please fix soon...M.D.

Kai Kadooka

Casting Call! Ember: Book 1

Today we cast the fun loving, easy going, best friend of Max...Kai Kadooka. His character is one of the few people that enters Max's life because of his love of music and not his fire-starting powers. The two friends are inseparable. Kai has a heart of gold and a silly sense of humor. I've had a hard time casting this character before...too many options. With the right wardrobe and makeup, many young actors out there could play the role.

But we'll give Jeremy Sumpter (Peter Pan, Sole Surfer)  first dibs.

Strap some thick messy dreadlocks on him and I think he'd do fine. Until next time...M.D.

Q & A!

Wednesday Q & A...

A: Probably a short story or mini comic book when I was 10 or 11. I used to make my own comic books, fully plotting out the adventures. I wrote a syfy story for school (6th or 7th grade) once and it opened my mind to the possibilities of creating my own worlds and characters.

A: Tough one to answer, my world and brain is revolving around Max Valentine and the Ember series right I have a huge fondness for what I'm writing at the moment. Though, I have a future project that I've been tinkering with and I am VERY excited to fully embrace. I cannot say what it is just yet BUT I will say that it's dark, adult and chilling...

A: I was hoping to have it out in the wild by now but a monkey wrench has hit the process. It's a GOOD monkey wrench though. A new "publishing" option has entered the fray and it is delaying the release of DOWNPOUR. Trust that it is ready for the world and I will hopefully be able to explain exactly what's going on in the very near future! Fingers crossed...M.D.

Jem "24"

Music Monday!

It's a new day, a new week and a new month. Time for some tunes!

"24" by Jem has always been one of my favorite songs by an artist that I feel has been overlooked by most. Her music is poppy, dark, inspiring and haunting all at once. I love it.

Chapter 23 - INFERNO: is the perfect place for the song in my book Ember. Max has kept his fire-starting powers under control long enough and with a massive shove, Devon has unleashed the inferno's inside of Max. It's fight time! I absolutely loved writing this chapter. Devon and his friends have had this moment coming since Max first arrived on Maui. Can't spoil what happens BUT I will say do you stop an out of control don't. Things will change drastically after this moment in the Ember Series. This moment sets up a domino effect throughout the rest of the books. Hope you like...

Lucy Zhang

Casting the Ember movie.

She was originally one of the secondary characters who became vital to the story arc of the Ember Series. Lucy Zhang is the eccentric, protective, and jealous ex-friend (maybe more!) of Asia. She is the catalyst for a few very memorable scenes in the books.

While writing the story I didn't have anyone in particular for the part BUT after watching the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, I had found my Lucy.

Ellen Wong plays Knives Chau in the film and she is, to say the least, perfect for the part of Lucy!

Just paint some blue streaks down the front of her bangs and Lucy comes alive. Let me know who you think would fit the "dream" cast for Ember...M.D.

Ashes Divide - Forever Can Be

Music Monday!!!

Lets start this last week of September with one of my all time favorite songs...

FOREVER CAN BE by Ashes Divide.

I usually pick a song from one of my books playlist but this time I was inspired by someone to post this song. Thanks Nate! This song will soon be represented in one of my future books (just not published yet!).

Why this song? First off the music is completely haunting yet hopeful. Second, the lyrics have so many hidden levels...deep, dark, and filled with hope. It truly speaks to me. Hopefully it will resonate with something inside of you too...

The Ultimate Distraction...

Gears of War 3 Review!!!

I'm a writer. BUT lately I have been having the hardest time finding my words. Not because of writers block. Not because of family engagements. It's because of Epic's new release...Gears of War 3.

A gamer at heart, I thought I'd review the new monkey wrench in my creativity. First off, I'm a huge Gears fan and been waiting for this final installment for years. It is everything I have been waiting for. Blood, guts, guns, war and more blood all rolled into a beautiful package.

For any fan of the first 2 games, the 3rd installment is easily the best. Better story, better battle scenes, better graphics. For non fans, this 3rd chapter probably won't change your mind in becoming a fan. It's only drawback is that it is more of the same. Yes, it's on a grander scale but it's still just grunt, grind and move on. (not that thats a bad thing!) The story ends satisfyingly enough and left me wanting another few chapters in the series. I won't post any spoilers though (I hate that!)

If your a gamer (like me), than your in for a treat...grab a copy of GOW 3 (Xbox 360). In a year of big games ready to hit the shelves, it just may end up the last man is that good!

Now to finish another round of multiplayer deathmatch before I write that award winning novel...

...ugh...damn you Epic!...

Frank Valentine

Casting Call Thursday!

This week we will focus our movie casting on Max's protective and easy going Uncle Frank. Frank Valentine was originally influenced by one of my own relatives who I had grown quite fond of BUT I always saw a certain actor while I wrote the character...Mark Harmon (NCIS).

He has the perfect stern yet easy going demeanor for the character. Not to mention he can ACT! Let me know what you think...M.D.

More Q & A...

Ask me and I'll speak the truth...

Here's the newest batch of questions...

A: Ember the series takes place on Maui, for the most part. In book 2 DOWNPOUR, the scenery changes a lot. The story calls for it. First third of the book is a globe trotting adventure. Book 3 AFTERSHOCK, gets things back to the islands (Maui). I chose the Hawaiian islands because of a dream. I dreamt one of the scenes from the first book Ember. It takes place in one of the later chapters at the moment before all heck breaks loose. I saw a boy lying in the pouring rain with two girls crying over him, with the song "SIGN YOUR NAME" by Terrence Trent D'Arby serenading the scene. I hope that wasn't a spoiler!

A: Yes and no. Each book shares a very islandy soundscape with different emotional tracks scattered throughout. Ember has more easy, laid back youthful songs. Downpour is much more emotional and worldly. Aftershock (book 3) seems to be a even mix of both the first 2 music to make you feel as if you were standing along the beaches with the island storms blowing through your earbuds. Plus very direct and emotional tunes that reflect the characters adventures and troubles.

A: Because I really do feel that "music is life." We learn with it, grow with it, heal with it, love with it...why not read with it. Many people already make their own playlists while they read their favorite book, I figured I'd give my readers a musical "crumb trail." They don't have to follow it. They can create their own but the soundtrack would really enhance the stories plot points. Many of the songs really influenced the story and its characters. My ultimate goal is to have my newest book and accompanying playlist on the top of the charts. You download my book and the songs download along side it. Easy peasy! M.D.

Nuno Bettencourt: Crave

Music Monday!

One of my favorite songs of all time!

"CRAVE" by Nuno Bettencourt.

I'm willing to bet 90% of the world has never heard this song or its talented writer. Nuno is best known as the lead guitarist for the band Extreme (more recently he has filled the same role for Rihanna, on her world tours...) When I sat down to write the Ember Series, this song instantly found a place on the musical playlists.

Chapter 24_CRAVE is one of my favorites in Ember. The words and song are intertwined into the chapter as Asia kidnaps Max and surprises him with a...well...I guess I shouldn't spoil the surprise...(the word CRAVE is involved...)

I hope you enjoy the song and the chapter it represents. It was one of the easiest ones to write in the Ember Series...M.D.

Review Friday!!!

It's Friday and time for another review.

Being a new author I've found that there are days when I have way too much on my plate...this is one of those days. So instead of my usual review of something I love or hate, I'm going to share a quick review of my book Ember. It's short, sweet and to the point...

I'll have plenty to say next week...until then...M.D.

Devon Wahlberg

Casting Call!!!

Another Thursday, another pick for the cast of the future Ember movie. This week we'll concentrate on the cocky and bullheaded Devon Wahlberg. Samantha's overprotective ex boyfriend and colossal bully. He becomes Max's arch rival. His personal Lex Luthor...

I had originally saw Kellan Lutz (90210 & twilight) while I wrote the first book. He had just started the series 90210 and it was before the whole "twilight madness." He had the perfect smug and cocky overtones I used for Devon's character. Now...I don't think anyone could see him as anyone but Emmett Cullen...

When you read Ember you will find it easy to see I was very influenced by Kellan's look when describing his character. Let me know what you guys and gals think...until next time...M.D.

More Questions...

Q & A!!!

Hopefully I'll have an interview from someone other than myself soon...

Kinda feel like I'm talking to myself every Wednesday.

A: I just write whatever I feel. It just so happened that my first book (EMBER) came out that way. I was in the zone and wrote the second book (DOWNPOUR) as well. When I finally began to show it off, it appealed to the older teenage I just went with it. I have started other stories and novels that are definitely more adult. Just wait...

A: Hopefully sooner than later. I'm concentrating on finishing the halfway point of the Ember Series (book 3) right now. After that I will be launching another YA series called 13 BREATHS. But after that I really want to push for an adult book. I have a horror story plotted out and a thriller that I'm very excited about. Both are very much geared to the adult audience.

A: Hard to say. It is written and done. I just need to polish it up a little. My time is being eaten up by the Ember Series right now. Promoting book 1 - EMBER, readying book 2 - DOWNPOUR for release at the end of September and finishing the third book - AFTERSHOCK for release before the end of the year. I haven't decided if I'll squeeze 13 BREATHS in somewhere before I finish up AFTERSHOCK. Not enough time in the day...ugh...write on!

Music Monday!!!

The voice of Max Valentine...

BUSH: "The Sound of Winter"

Instead of a song from my current playlist for Ember, I've decided to change it up just a little. The new BUSH single is constantly rattling around my head as I write lately. I've always used Gavin and the boys as the musical voice of Max. In book 1 Ember, he sings the BUSH song "Mouth" for his first concert. (I'll add that to a future Music Monday!) They just seem to share a certain gravel in their tone...if Max Valentine were to be brought into the flesh, I'm sure he would sing like this...

Anyways, I hope you enjoy...

Look...listen...fade away...M.D.

It Can't Rain All The Time...

Friday Review!

It's the end of the week and time for another review. This week I thought I'd talk about one of my favorite movies. It has inspired almost all my writing.

The Crow.

Dark, gritty, violent and filled with dying hope. I find the visual ugliness in the movie...beautiful. The story of future rockstar, Eric Draven and his murdered girlfriend is tragic and filled with hope. When the young couple are murdered in their apartment by the scum of the city, Eric is brought back to life one year later to exact revenge on the ones who wronged them.

Eric is poetic justice in evil clown makeup. As he finds the people responsible for his (and her) death, they fall to his vengeance. With each kill he is brought closer to what he wants the most...peace with the girl he will always love...even in the hereafter...

The movie is filled with clever fight sequences and fantastic music. The soundtrack is just as popular as the movie. The character has become a mainstay at Halloween over the years. There has been 3 sequels made (None of them even half as good as the first!) and a short lived TV show. Recently the property has been dusted off for a new Hollywood remake. Big mistake! The Crow is one of those movies that does not ever need to be it the perfect movie? No, but it is a classic.

The spirit of this movie is what makes it appealing to me. True love never dies...

P.S. "We miss you Brandon..."

Samantha Summers!

Casting Call Thursday...

Sweet, artistic, confident girl next door Samantha Summers is in the spotlight today. I've always had a little trouble casting her character...too many options. For my first choice though we'll go with the actress that popped in my head every now and then while writing the Ember Series...Amanda Seyfried.

She has the perfect mix of confidence and strength that carries Samantha through the story. What do you think? M.D.

Q & A Wednesday!!!

Lets keep it light today...

A: youth! When I was a kid it was Transformers and Voltron. I would start my mornings with the latest episode of transforming robots and finish my afternoon, running home to catch the 5 mighty lions do their best to save the universe. I'm thinking about starting up that routine again!

Now, as an adult, there is only one cartoon worthy of my praise...Invader Zim!

A: Boxers. It's a freedom thing...

A: I'm a pretty simple boy...burgers, tacos, chips...BUT lately I can not seem to get enough of Chinese food.

KUNG POW!!!...M.D.

Music Monday - Holiday Edition...

311 - Amber

Chapter 04_Morning Glory

The perfect song to introduce Samantha Summers. Max's other love interest in the Ember Series. The song fits the moment perfectly. Island morning, playful banter, young tropical infatuation...

Look. Listen. Fade away...M.D.

New Chili Peppers!

Friday Review!

The new Red Hot Chili Peppers album "I'M WITH YOU" just came out. I'm a long time fan. So here goes my review.

It's been awhile since their last album. I hadn't realized how much I missed their funky sounds. That being said...I'm a little disappointed in their new album. It has a vibe that says "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT." Now there's nothing wrong with sticking to familiar territory but this is the Peppers. One of the most influential bands in 20 years. So many younger bands have tried to be the "next Chili Peppers" and failed miserably. So when this many years (6) have passed without any new music, it should be better than "middle of the road."

Now don't get me wrong...there are some bright spots on the new album. "Brendan's Death Song, Rain Dance Maggie..."are a couple stand outs. BUT I felt like at the end of each track I wanted more. Middle of the road just isn't good enough when it comes to a band I respect and cherish.

I think I'M WITH YOU the album will grow on me (AT LEAST I HOPE SO...). I hope to use it to write a future chapter in a story that hasn't been born yet...we shall see...M.D.

Asia Lyn Michaels

Casting Call Thursday!!!

Last week we cast Max Valentine, now lets turn our attention to the first of his temptations...Asia. She was originally inspired by a comic book character. But for a movie, there are a few options. She has to convey confidence, sadness, anger and spoiled rich girl all in one.

Many people have told me that Megan Fox would fit the roll but I always saw someone a little less "hard edged" than that... Odette Yustman (Cloverfield) I think would fit well. I know, weird name (I had to look it up!)

Slap some ice blue contacts in her eyes and Asia comes to life. Sadly, like my previous pick for Max (Ben Barnes), I think she may be getting too old now to play the troubled rainmaker.

Let me know what you think...M.D.

Q & A...

Q & A Wednesday...

A: The publishing industry seems to be in a bad state right now. It's almost impossible for a new voice to be given a chance. The shift from paper to electronic reading is also unstoppable. I love my digital books! It's so easy to access and find new writers to fall in love with. Don't get me wrong, I am still very much interested in making my book(s) into physical copies but it is just not needed anymore. Embrace the future...

A: Finishing up the third book in the Ember series, Aftershock. After that I will step away from the series for a little bit. I have a new trilogy ready and waiting to publish called 13 BREATHS. The first book of the three is complete. It's awesome! I'm so excited to have people read it.

A: King! King! King! Stephen King is the man. Music and the eye candy that fills my head is my biggest influences though. I see the world as an endless music video...that's how I write. M.D.

J Scott Campbell

Linky Dinks Tuesday!!!

Showing some love for my favorite artist on the planet...J Scott Campbell. His artwork includes the comics Gen 13, Danger Girl, Wildsiderz and many more. His interpretation of Aspen Matthews (Fathom comic), was one of my biggest inspirations for Asia in my book Ember...

Check out one of his pages here:

Zero 7 - Destiny (HD Official Video)

Music Monday!

Zero 7: Destiny...

Chapter 20_DESTINY starts with this haunting melody. Exactly the feel and mood I wanted to convey on Max and Samantha's midnight date. Things change for Max drastically this night. Stars, sand, new love and the excitement of the future spin around in my brain when I listen to this song...enjoy.

It's Thunderdome!!!

Free Rant Weekends!!!

Saturday and Sunday are my days to babble on about whatever pleases or annoys me at the moment.

I blog, therefor I am... I'm still getting the hang of this crazy thing call blogging. I want to get the word out on my writing and books but sometimes it feels like nobodies listening. Words are important and should not be wasted. Sometimes it feels like I'm wasting them with all the different venues in cyber space. To the few who have clicked on my words and took the time to read them...I thank you and hope you come back for more.

I have found blogs that I enjoy immensely and others that seem to make me ask "why?" To each his/her own... I'm not giving up on this blogging thing, just venting slightly.

I write because I have to. I need to. I love it. My writing and words will not change the world. My stories exist for one reason...pleasure. Escape from the big bad world that consumes so many of us everyday. Words tied together with music is a powerful being. I am just shaping that "being" into hopefully something beautiful.

Look...listen...fade away...M.D.

Addicted to Dex!!!

Review Friday!!!

My first official review. I had wanted to make my first review on a book or movie BUT as any new author can tell you; there just aren't enough hours! Sooooooo, I figured I'd review my newest and most addictive obsession...DEXTER.

Dexter is easily the best written and heart stopping show on TV (Showtime). Season 6 is almost here but I figure I should start with season 1.

It all starts with a dark passenger...

Season 1 sets the tone for all the rest of the seasons. The story is about Dexter Morgan who is secretly a killer. He was born into this. Thankfully he has learned to channel his evil intentions towards the worst of society. (THINK BATMAN ON A REALLY BAD DAY!)

This show is almost impossible to write a review for without giving away some kind of detail or twist. So I will only say this... it is filled with cutting edge humor, excellent pacing, story twists galore and most surprising of all...heart. One warning though, everyone in the cast is fair game...choose your favorite carefully...

The show is definitely adult. No kids aloud - for good reason.

Out of the first 5 seasons, DEXTER: SEASON 1 is one of my favorites. (SEASON 4 IS THE BENCHMARK!) Find it on blu-ray, dvd or netflix ASAP. You won't be sorry...M.D.

Max Valentine...

Casting Call Thursday!!!

Since this is the first post for "casting" I suppose we should start with the troubled and hot-headed Max Valentine, the main character from the Ember Series.

While writing the book I saw Max as a young Johnny Depp type but by the end I had moved on to Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian).

He's perfect. All about the bangs! BUT as I've waited so long to publish the first book I think he might be to old now...

I would love to hear any ideas about casting the first Ember movie...M.D.
